Harrows Apex Points

Harrows recently launched a new range of points in two styles the Apex and normal.  The Apex have a tapered collar so that it gives a smooth transition from point to barrel and the normal are like a more standard style.

Both types of points are available in black and silver and they have three styles of grip: Lance, Ridge and Sabre.

The Apex points are available in 26mm and 30mm and the normal are available in 32mm, 35mm and 38mm.

The Apex points retail for £5.95 and the normal version £4.95.

I have included a pic above of Harrows graphic which illustrates the features of the Apex point and is a good quick reference worth checking out.

There is a vast array of points on the market these days and its become almost like a fashion to customize your darts the way you want them to look or if you need a specific length or grip style, you are spoilt for choice really.

Personally I am quite happy with a bog standard plain smooth black coated point but I appreciate the reasons others may need something different.  One obvious reason is having some grip on the point for finger placement if thats what you need and another is having a little bit of grip on the point to make sure it stick into the board well.   My own thoughts on such points are that one I dont particularly need grip on the point even though I rest my finger on it and two often such grippy points can wear the board quicker.

Having said that if you are competing then I would say you should give yourself every possible advantage you can and if that means having points that stick into the board well even though it may ruin the board then so be it 🙂

Another issue I have been wary of with points that have grooves machined into them is the fact its increasing the chance of breakage.  This is something I have seen often over the last few years and one of the reasons Harrows have made these points like they have.

As you can see in the graphic above Harrows have kept the internal (main) core of the point intact and used a hardened steel point where the grip is on the outside of that core, this helps to keep the strength of the point intact.

In the video above I test the strength of the points with a hammer and they do break on my second hit but they did not break on the grooves so seem to be as robust as can be for such a point as this.

The points also stick well into the board but I never noticed any fibres getting pulled out, the points have a rounded groove near the front which helps it stick but does not tug the fibres.

There is a nice variety in the range and no doubt they will come out with more so if you like this kind of point then its probably worth a look.
