Well we do have a lot of choices now with dartboard lighting systems and here is the latest, the Unicorn Solar Flare Integrated Illuminated Pro Surround to give it its full title 🙂
I first saw this at the Unicorn launch this year and it looked very neat and sturdy. It is made from injection moulded plastic and has an aluminium cover on the front.
As is the case with all the recent lighting systems it uses a strip of led lights which are powered by the power adapter included in the pack (comes with 5 plug adapter for various countries) providing 360 degree shadow free illumination.
The Solar Flare will fit any size dartboard and can be used with or without a dartboard surround thanks to the very clever and neat design of the retention legs. There is two sets of five retention legs in the box. One set is flat sided and is used when using the Solar Flare with a surround. The other set is dual function and can be used for a normal pro standard size board or if you have a slightly smaller board you turn it the other way and it has a couple of lugs and a larger lip to fit the board better.
Once you have the legs inserted it slips inbetween the surround and the board if using the flat legs or you clip it over the edge of the board if using the other legs without a surround. Very easy to do and it stays nice a snugly fitted.
I especially like the nice fit when its on the surround as you can see in the pics below.
Once fitted you just clip in the power cord and your ready to go and the cable length is about 3.4m so plenty of length for most I think.
Overall I think its a very neat and robust surround, it feels very nicely made and strong but light too.
At £69.95 its not exactly cheap but its not too bad for such a commercial lighting surround thats made as good as this.
So obviously we have a lot of these to chose from now and its difficult to decide which is best as they all pretty much do the same thing. I think this is certainly stronger than the Target Corona and has a neat way of fixing and probably looks a little neater overall. The Corona is a little bit cheaper and I think has a slightly whiter light and also has a rocker switch on the power cord which the Solar Flare does not but I cant really decide which I would prefer to be honest. I think if they were both the same price I would probably favour the Solar Flare though, thats about as much as I can help you in that decision :
