These are the new 975 darts from Target Darts 2021 range. The darts are so called because of the 97.5% tungsten which is the highest in the Target range. The grip on the barrels is the hexagonal cell grip which was first seen on the Fourth Edition Elysian darts.
There is 3 models in the range and the 01 and 01 at first look very similar but the 02 which is reviewed here is a tapered style, wider at front then thinner at the rear.
It has two sections of the cell grip on front and rear and the centre is made of sets of triple thin rings fairly widely spaced. The darts also incorporate the Target Swiss point system and the barrels have a nice black ti nitride coating on.
As you can see from the pics and video its a very well packaged set with an exclusive Takoma 975 wallet and a nicely made and weighty zinc alloy Swiss point removal tool keyring.
There is also extra Swiss points and extra flights and flight protectors as well as a 975 pin badge. The darts come supplied with the Target Pro ti carbon stems too.
It really feels like you are getting a high end Elysian set with this pack but for a third of the price. The packaging and extras and also little 975 booklet all have that premium Elysian feel.
Of course the Elysian are more for collecting and these I guess are going to be more for people that want to use them, so for that reason some people may prefer not to have all the extra stuff, but nonetheless its very neatly done.
The darts cell grip has a slightly unusual feel, the closest I can describe it is like those old table tennis bats with the one layer of pimply rubber. I think the darts felt a touch grippier when throwing them than just feeling them in the fingers though.
For me as a front gripper this barrel has a nice front weighted feel but its not as much biased to the front as I was expecting. I think that could be down to how much its machined and also having the thread cut out the front for the Swiss points.
The Swiss points are still a marmite thing for many, but I think since Target have improved the strength of them they are getting more popular. They stay in fine though.
Middle grippers have a standard rings style grip but the darts did feel very nicely weighted when I threw from the middle.
Rear grippers may be fine but for me it is not so great as its so unnatural for me but I did think the cell grip on the rear had a very slightly more grippy feel. I would say if you are a rear gripper that likes this shape of barrel though it should suit you well.
The machining on the darts as far as I can tell is flawless, its very clean and neat considering how many angled cuts there is. I would have normally knocked half a point off the quality score because it was not 100% weight matched, but because its so well machined I felt it would have been a bit unjust to do so.
So the main issue for many will be the price, I was tempted to go for 6 out of 10 but I can see its a lot to spend on a set but I guess there is arguments for and against why it could be a little more or less than the score I gave it, so in that respect it very much depends on the individuals thinking.
Of course no matter how good a dart is or how well its made it wont guarantee it will work better for you than something of lesser perfection and price so in the end its down to you to decide the true value 🙂
On the whole though its a very nice set of dart that is superbly machined and presented but may be not necessary for many.
