A review of one of the most popular sets for a while that have been very hard to get for many due to stock shortages, the Joe Cullen darts from Winmau. I actually bought these not many days after release but they were sold out so had to wait a while before I got them. Think I finally got them just before Christmas but many have still been waiting longer than that! Not sure why but suspect Covid has something to do with it but even so its been a frustrating launch from Winmau due to such stock shortages. What is more annoying for me is they did not come in the proper Joe Cullen box but another generic grey box like the Winmau Willie O’Connor darts came in. Again I have no idea if the packaging was also in short supply or if thats an option for some retailers to purchase them like that for what ever reason. When I bought them they were also “2 cheaper than at the present price.
Anyway enough moaning about that lets talk about the darts 🙂
The darts are basically a straight barrel style with a tapered nose but a very subtle scalloped middle. Its a nice looking dart which I think is made so by the red metallic grooves of the centre giving a nice contrast to the black pvd coating. Grip is a thin double ring grip on front and rear and the centre is a wide ring grip with wide deep grooves. Its a mild level of grip front and rear and a touch more grippy at the centre due to the wide grooves and also the scallop adds a little to the grip too.
I think its a dart that should work best for middle grippers and the scallop is comfortable in the fingers and is easy to locate the grip in the same spot each time and of course its nicely balanced there also.
It works fine front and rear but I feel its the middle gripper who will get the best from it and for me as a front gripper it just felt like throwing any other straight barrel dart with a tapered nose, so nothing special in that respect.
If its a darts player you are a fan of then you have likely bought them already anyway but other than that I dont see much reason for front or rear grippers to buy a set. Its a nice looking dart neatly made though so if you just like the look of them then fine 🙂
